Take, for example, last night’s debate between President Barack Obama and former Governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney.
Mitt Romney came up with a good game plan to blame Barack Obama for four years of economic slow growth. I think this was expected. He was going to prosecute the four years of President Obama as being ineffective and incompetent and he deserves a shot at the Presidency to turn this around and increase growth. The smart thing he did was to remain vague about what growth was he promising.
What was not expected is the lack of simple, but solid defense against that predictable attack by President Obama. It is one thing to lose the debate on style but because he was not forceful in defending his four years and clarify what Mitt Romney was not saying, he also lost on the substance too.
I got us out of the terrible mess we were in and we have done well in some areas and improving in other areas. I am proud to say that we have fixed the mess we were in and are positioned to take off in the next four years moving forward rather than going backwards as my opponent wants us to take us.
This is all he had to do. Nothing more. Mitt Romney would suddenly find himself on defense where he would have to explain does he want to redo the last four years or does he have a concrete plan for the next four years. This would have set the debate on Obama’s term. He failed to clearly communicate this and now faces a tough re-election. With better communication, he could have ended the race last night. Now it becomes a real struggle.
